I love a good homemade cookie.  Too bad I don't bake very good ones.  Picky Eater is the star cookie baker in our house ~ her specialty?  Chocolate chip cookies, recipe courtesy of the chocolate chip bag.  I think I recently found my cookie, though.  Old-fashioned oatmeal cookies.  And they are truly old-school.

This recipe comes from my mom's friend, Ann ~ the friend who gave me her family's butterscotch crunch squares ice cream dessert recipe.  Ann's oatmeal cookie recipe was her mother's, her family calls them Grambi's Oatmeal Cookies.  I just knew they'd be good.  And they are.

So, gosh, thinking this recipe may be close to 100 years old?  Not sure on that, but close anyway. I love these recipes that get handed down generations, for good reason.  They're familiar, comforting, taste great and, who doesn't love grandma and mom's cooking?

Here's to Grambi and her oatmeal cookies.  Thanks, Ann.  Enjoy an old-fashioned oatmeal cookie with a cold glass of milk and think of your mom or grandma.  I guarantee it will bring a smile to your face ~ Kelly🍴🐦

  1. I have to use sugar substitute that is organic and doesn’t raise my blood sugar. Could I substitute equal parts to the sugar amount with “Pure” ?

    1. I'm not at all familiar with sugar substitutes so I can't really advise you on this. Can you use past experience as a guide? Maybe Google how much to substitute sugar with Pure? I'm sure others have wondered how much to use in place of sugar.

  2. Hi, im about to make these cookies for the first time. Could I add peanut butter and cinnamon? If so, how much? I'm used to old fashioned Quaker oats cookies, but really wanted to try these. How do I keep them from being flat and sppread, because several posts say they had that problem.?

    1. I've not ever added peanut butter so I do not know how that would work or how much to add. Cinnamon should be fine, maybe a half teaspoon or so. My cookies turn out like the photos, they are not dense cookies, they spread a little and that's fine.

Love the recipe. They taste great. Unfortunately, I also had the 'flat' problem. I used a sil pat though so next go I will try without and let you know. Thanks!

  4. I made these exactly as written...when I opened the oven they spread so much I had one giant cookie, flat as a pancake!! Had to cut them apart. I’m an avid baker, never had this happen. Any idea what went wrong ?

    1. I don't know why that happened. I am not a expert/seasoned baker but I haven't found these to spread like you are saying. Maybe make sure you cream the ingredients well?

Hi I made these and they were crispy and yummy. They looked a little flat though... did I use too much dough in the ball? do you know what it might be??

I made these today and they are SO good! My only change was to add some raisins. I just had to get them out of eyesight so I'd stop eating them, lol. Thank you for the recipe! Sidenote, your blog is beautiful! I just started my own and yours has inspired me to make some changes to make it a bit more visually appealing and easy to navigate. 🙂 so thanks for that too! 🙂

I finally made my own grandmother's cookies! Thank you, Kelly, for bringing these back. My mother remembered something after I baked them up. Her mother would sometimes put a pecan half in the middle of each cookie. When I was a little girl, I didn't like nuts. She probably left them off for me. I might try the pecan variation on a few cookies in the next batch. They're delicious, and exactly how I remember them.

    1. They are so good ~ very popular on the blog right now! I love the pecan in the middle, I am going to try that next batch and then update the post with this option. I love pecans!

  9. Hi. These cookies look soooo good! Do you think it would work if i made it with almond flour? Maybe 1/2 cup all purpose and 1/2 cup almond flour. But first im definitely making the original recipe :-). Thank you!!!

    1. I've never used almond flour but I think you could certainly try it. I've read you may need more egg or binding agent, like butter. You could try half and half, and if you try all almond flour, you might need to adjust the egg/butter amounts a little bit. Hope that answer helps ~ when it comes to baking, I just follow recipes as written ?‍??
